Max’s latest political drama The Girls on the Bus is officially not coming back for another season. This comes after the Melissa Benoist-led drama had recently ended its debut season’s 10-episode run last May 9.
Per Deadline, Max has decided not renew The Girls on the Bus for a second season, after the show failed to break into Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings. The political drama marked Benoist’s first major TV project in three years, since wrapping up The CW’s Supergirl series which ran on-air for six seasons from 2015-2021.
“While Max will not be moving forward with a second season of The Girls on the Bus, we are grateful to have partnered with immensely talented Amy Chozick, Julie Plec, Rina Mimoun, as well as the teams at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television,” Max said in a statement. “We are so proud of this powerful story of found family and the celebration of journalism, in all its forms. We thank them and our unrivaled cast for all their incredible work and collaboration.”
Who was involved in The Girls on the Bus?
The Girls on the Bus was created and executive produced by Amy Chozick and Julie Plec, with Rina Mimoun set as the showrunner. It was inspired by Chozick’s experiences as a political reporter on the campaign bus with multiple presidential candidates. The series also starred Carla Gugino, Natasha Behnam, Christina Elmore, Brandon Scott, with Griffin Dunne, Mark Consuelos, and Scott Foley. In addition to leading the cast, Benoist was also serving as a producer. This project also reunited her with executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, who Benoist previously worked with on the Arrowverse shows.
“It follows four female journalists, each of them different in their reporting styles and personalities. The story centers on Sadie McCarthy, a journalist who romanticizes a bygone era of campaign reporting and scraps her whole life for a shot at covering a presidential candidate for a paper of record,” reads the logline. “Sadie joins the bus and eventually bonds with three female competitors, Grace, Lola, and Kimberlyn. Despite their differences, the women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town – the battle for the White House.”
